According to the Georgia Department of Labor the unemployment rate for metro Augusta rose to 8.9 percent in December 2011. But in Augusta, the jobless rate is about one percent higher. Andrew Rischbeiter is one of those "numbers" and by hitting job fairs like a one at Christenberry Field House in Augusta Friday, he's doing what he can to reverse the trend.
“Been doing a lot searching online really not getting a lot of interviews and a lot of hits. So this seemed like a good Idea to get out and meet one on one with people shake some hands, and really get myself out there in the job market rather than sitting at home waiting for the resumes to do the trick,” said Rischbieter.
Rischbeiter admits times have been hard but he refuses to give up.
“A lot of resumes out. I would say I can easily say I have applied for over one hundred positions since I have been unemployed. And it's been several months now, “said Rischbeiter.
The unemployment rate may be up in Augusta, but these employers say there are job openings. They're just waiting on you.
“In the area we are hiring for the retail stores for sales and support individuals for the customers. We have continued to hire all through the years here with the economy and we are very proud of that,” said Christine Shively, with Verizon Wireless.
“Looking for work and are interested in working. Come down to Global Solutions and we will do what we can to assist you,” said Giselle Brown.
According to Goodwill, volunteer work is a good way to turn a good "deed" into a good paying job.
“Often volunteering helps you get your foot in the door and get some experience on your resume as you are searching for a job. So we work with people that just want that experience,” said a Goodwill representative.
Despite the local numbers, unemployment is trending down nationally for the first time in years. And as these businesses will tell you, your next job is closer than you think.
Goodwill is holding a Job fair in March at their Peach Orchard location, check your neighborhood Goodwill for details.
